Seeing the moon light shown through the window casting a glow on to the dingy jewel colored walls of the apartment. Mayven sitting on her window seat looking out at the drizzling night. She looks down on the street below her 3rd floor walk-up apartment in China town. She sees all the people bustling on the street and can’t help but think where are they going? She picks up her phone and starts some alternative rock playing softly in the background. While in deep thought, there is a knock on the door.
She gets up and makes her way to the door, hesitating to open it she checks out the peep hole where she sees a tall thin man in drenched clothes sticking to his skin, his short dark hair, limp falling in his face carelessly. He is bobbing his head and doing a little dance to whatever music is playing in his ear buds. He has her standing Friday night Chinese food delivery. She opens the door, the man stops, looking startled at her. He quickly admires her figure and is astounded at how attractive she is. She says, “You must be new. I’ve never seen you before.” He rubs his neck trying to distract himself from staring at her, in her daisy duke shorts cut rather high and her figure-hugging tank top that show all the curves in just the right places. She smiles and says, “Do you have anything for me to sign there chief?” This process is nothing new to her. He doesn’t utter a word and holds out the receipt book covered in a tattered plastic bag so as not to get it wet. She giggles, opens it, signs the receipt, and wraps it back up to keep it dry. She tries to hand it back to him and notices that his head is now bobbing again. He is looking everywhere but at her. She lightly taps his arm and says, “Do you want this?” He’s listening to his music again so as not to stare at her curly auburn tousled hair and brown eyes, feels the tap and realizes she was again talking to him. He apologizes and takes the book, and clumsily holds out the other hand with her bag of food. She smiles and takes her food. They both say at the same time “Have a good night” with a smile. He turns to bob down the hall way with a little dance. She turns and goes back into her dimly lit apartment. Grabbing a spoon from the kitchen for her fried rice, she makes her way through her living room back to the window seat. Opening up her food and slowly starting to eat while she enjoys people watching again. She goes into a bit of thought and tries to think about what kind of lives some of the people on the street have. A few minutes into this, she sees the delivery guy walking down the street.
A strange looking figure in a dark leather jacket and camo baseball hat is leaning against the corner of a building down the street. She stops eating and wonders, who hangs out at night on the street in the rain? Is he working for one of the businesses? Or is he just one of those strange people that does things like that? What is his purpose? While lost in her thoughts, she snaps out of it quickly when she sees the delivery guy getting closer to him. He is dancing on his way back to work at this point, he doesn’t notice the man leaning purposefully against the building. The strange man straightens up and looks like he is getting mad. His stance reflects someone as if they were going to fight. All stiff and rigid. He must have made some kind of noise as the delivery guy turned to look at him. The stranger got really close and before she realized it. The stranger had pulled the delivery guy in to him, rough and swift. The delivery guy went limp and didn’t seem to be moving. Mayven let out a yelp and said “Did he hurt him?” With no one in the room to answer, she looks around for her phone dropping her food on the floor as she gets up. She grabs her phone and a jacket on her way to the door. As she is running down the stairs, she calls 911.
The female voice on the other end of the phone “911, what is the nature of your emergency?” Mayven a little breathless says “I think I saw a crime.” The operator says “Ma’am, this is New York. If sent a cop out for every time someone thought they saw something, we would never get anything done.” As the operator says this, Mayven gets to the entrance of her building and see a lump on the ground where the incident happened. She yells at the operator, “LOOK LADY! SOMEONE HAS BEEN HURT ON THE CORNER OF ELDRIDGE AND CANAL SEND HELP!” She is running to see what the lump is. As she runs, she feels the cold wet concrete on her feet. Nearing the lump, she drops to her knees and sees only a hoodie that the delivery man was wearing and a diluted little puddle that looks like it could be blood. But she has no idea and knows she shouldn’t touch it.
After a few moments, a squad car shows up and pulls around to have its head lights on her. A deep male voice, “Are you the one to call 911?” Out of breath and confused she shakes her head yes. He asks, “Are you the one in need of medical attention?” She shook her head no. He takes a step closer. She now sees he has his service pistol drawn on her. Sitting on the ground and feeling the rush of adrenaline, she realizes she needs to speak. But when she opens her mouth to speak another squad car pulls up, lights on her. She yells “I am the one who called!” The first officer says, “Can you stand?” She said yes and stands up. One of the cars lights then shut off so everyone can see each other as the other officer starts to sweep the area and make sure there is no criminal activity around. The man with the deep voice walks up to her. She now sees he’s very muscular under his bullet proof vest. He says, “Ma’am, where is the person you called about?” She looks lost and confused at him and says, “I don’t know they were right here!” He replied, “Who was and which direction did they go?” She looks around to see if she could see them. “I… I… I don’t know… When I got down here, this is all that was here.” She gestured to the hoodie on the ground which she could see now was very dirty as if it had been laying there for days, people walking all over it.
The other officer from the second car is heard over the radio “Gianni, it's all clear around the perimeter.” The officer that is talking to her, squeezes his radio and says “10-4.” He looks at her with caring eyes and waits a moment. She looks him up and down and notices his badge says B. Gianni. “Ma’am are you ok? I can’t help if you don’t tell me what you saw.” She stands there getting wet and looking so confused. She is very certain of what she saw but there is nothing here but a dirty hoodie. She starts to tell the officer, “I was up in my apartment and I saw…” She starts to trail off trying to make sense of it in her own head. She thinks they were both right here. “Ma’am” She shakes her head and looks up at the officer. “Yes sir, I was up in my apartment.” and she gestured to her building, she goes on to tell him what she saw. He starts to look concerned and gets on the radio and says, “Tomkins, can you sweep again and look for a tall male, leather jacket and camo hat?” “10-4" They stand there, waiting. A break in silence “Gianni, ALL CLEAR.” Officer Gianni gets on his radio again and calmly says “10-1 com in”, a squawk, “Go ahead 4750” “I have a 10-64Z" “10-4 keep posted” He looks at her again and says “Ma’am, do you have your ID on you?” She says “No, I forgot my wallet in a hurry to get here.” He says what's your name, and address?” “ Mayven Daisy McCloud, 557 Eldrige St. #12, New York.” Officer Tomkins is back at this point standing next to Gianni. Gianni looks at him and says “Stay with her while I check things.” He walks back to his car and gets in. He gets over the radio and says he needs a name and address ran. It comes back that Mayven has no priors of any kind. The chief gets on the radio and asks what's going on. He explains how she is very disoriented and not really sure what they are looking for, or whom for that matter. The chief said they need to stop wasting time and fix the problem. “We are shorthanded and can’t be wasting time on nonsense.” He sighs,”10-4”.
Officer Gianni gets out of the car and approaches Tomkins and Miss McCloud. Officer Gianni walks straight up to Mayven and asks “Ma’am, are you on any medications or have you taken any drugs?” She looks at him and her face contorted in confusion “NO!” He tells Tomkins to call for a female. Mayven is looking more confused than ever. He says “Ma’am, I need you to turn around and put your hands behind your back.” “Wait what?” “Ma’am, cooperate with me please, turn around and put your hands behind your back.” She does but questions why. Officer Gianni’s voice trails off as she starts to cry hysterically. Mayven has no idea what she saw now or even what is happening to her? A female officer has arrived and starts to ask her questions but she doesn’t hear over the sound of her own crying. She feels hands frisking her to see if she has anything on her. It feels like she is drunk as she is led to the police car. With everything going on and unknown, it feels like everything has slowed down and happening in slow motion. She sits down in the car and bumped her head on the partition glass while getting in the car. The door closes. Her face covered in tears with her nose running. Now cuffed she can’t wipe it anywhere but on her shoulder. Officer Gianni gets in and says a bunch of code over the radio when she snaps out of her haze and says “Officer! Where are we going? What did I do?” She repeats herself several times like a chant. “Ma’am, you need to stay calm.” The car starts to move, she has no idea where it is going. Her head starts to hurt like it’s instantly in a vice and she can’t keep her eyes open. She closes them and just cries. She opens her eyes with a start to the sound of the car door closing. She looks around excitedly, she must have passed out for a minute from the excitement. She sees the car is parked next to a brick building; the rain has slowed down to just a fine mist. She looks around some more and sees that on the other side of the car closer to the main road there is a sign that says Mountain View Sanitarium. She reads it aloud not believing what she is reading. She is very excited and scared looking around trying to find a way out. At this point there are two men in white coming out to the car along with officer Gianni and another short fat balding man in a suit struggling to keep up with the other three men. The two very large muscular men in all white get to the car first and open the door. Mayven tries to scoot to the other side out of fear. The small fat man gets to the car and says “Miss McCloud, you are going to need to comply or I will have to sedate you.” “I don’t understand.” She kicks at the arms reaching in to get her. All the sudden she feels other door she was leaning against open and as she starts to fall out the other man in white caught her and sets her on the ground so she is standing. She is struggling making it very hard to hold onto her. The Doctor gets closer and as she was starting to be uncuffed she tried to bite him. In the commotion she felt a burning pain in her neck. The short man said, “I warned you my dear, this will make your stay with us hard.” She is very sleepy now. Just before she dozes off, she hears a whisper, from the officer. “I hope you get the help you need.” He gets in the car and slowly drives away. He looks back in the rear-view mirror to see a sleeping Mayven, carelessly slung over the goliath in white’s shoulder, being taken in the hospital.
